Choosing the right type of feed is essential in goose farming. When the feed meets the birds' nutritional needs, it improves efficiency, reduces waste, and supports better overall productivity.

Compared to mash or wet feed, pellets are becoming increasingly popular among goose farmers. They are easier to store and handle, more palatable, and less likely to be wasted.

While buying ready-made pellets is convenient, making your own goose feed pellets is often a smarter and more cost-effective choice in the long term.

Benefits of Making Your Own Pelleted Feed

Homemade goose feed pellets offer three key advantages.

1. Lower costs and better returns

Pellet feed can be produced using a wide range of local raw materials. Sourcing nearby ingredients helps reduce costs. The production process is simple and requires minimal labor. This gives farmers better control over operating expenses, and the equipment investment can often be recovered in a short period.

2. Flexible formulas and more precise nutrition

Making your own feed makes it easier to manage both ingredient quality and formula composition. You can adjust protein, energy, and trace element levels based on the actual needs of the flock. This helps meet the nutritional requirements of geese at different growth stages more accurately.

3. Better hygiene and lower disease risk

Making feed on-site allows full control over both ingredient sources and processing steps. This helps reduce the risk of mold and pathogen contamination, improving overall feed safety. Homemade pellets improve feeding efficiency, enhance palatability, and support more precise nutrition.

If you plan to produce your own feed, starting with the right formula is essential.

Feed Formulas for Different Growth Stages

Geese require different nutrients at each stage of growth.

Goslings need high-protein, easily digestible feed to support fast development.
Young geese benefit from slightly lower protein and higher energy to build muscle and bone.
Meat geese require energy-rich feed with moderate protein to help gain weight and store fat.

The following formulas are provided for reference:

Ingredient Main Function Goslings
(%)
Young Geese
(%)
Meat Geese
(%)
Corn Primary energy source 50 55 65
Rice bran Energy, small amount of fiber 5
Soybean meal Main source of plant protein 28 20 15
Fish meal High-quality animal protein 10 3 2.2
Wheat bran Fiber, aids digestion 10 18 10
Bone meal Calcium and phosphorus supplement 1.2 3.2 2
Salt Sodium and chloride supplement 0.5 0.5 0.5
Vitamin premix Vitamin supplement 0.1 0.1 0.1
Mineral premix Trace mineral supplement 0.1 0.1 0.1
Probiotic additive Supports gut health 0.1 0.1 0.1

(The ingredients and ratios can be adjusted based on your local resources and specific farming conditions.)

How to Make Goose Feed Pellets at Home

Making goose feed pellets at home is simple if you follow a few basic steps:

1. Prepare the ingredients

Gather all raw materials according to your feed formula. Use a batching scale or basic measuring tools to weigh each ingredient and keep a record. This helps maintain consistent nutrition in every batch.

2. Grinding

Use a small feed grinder to crush the ingredients into particles about 2–4 mm in size. This ensures better mixing and pellet formation.

If the particles are too large, the feed may mix unevenly and affect pellet quality. If too fine, geese might eat less.

If you don't have a grinder, a stone mill or basic crushing tool can work, though they're less efficient and often produce uneven results.

3. Mixing

Mixing is key to balanced nutrition. Use a feed mixer to blend the ground ingredients thoroughly. Stir for 3 to 5 minutes until the mixture is smooth, with no clumps or visible separation.

If you don't have a mixer, pour the ingredients into a large basin and mix by hand. Ensure the ingredients are fully and evenly combined. Poor mixing can lead to nutritional imbalance or health problems in the flock.

4. Pelletizing

Pelletizing is the core step in feed production. Use a feed pellet machine to compress the mixed materials into dense, cylindrical pellets. A cutter trims them to the desired length.

Choose the pellet size based on the birds' age: 4 mm for goslings, 6 mm for young geese, 8 mm or larger for meat geese.

Proper sizing helps the birds chew and swallow more easily.

5. Cooling and Drying

Freshly made pellets are still warm and contain excess moisture. Let them cool to room temperature and reduce the moisture content to a safe level, ideally below 12 percent. This helps prevent mold and improves pellet durability.

You may use a cooling machine or spread the pellets in a thin layer on a clean, well-ventilated surface to air-dry naturally.

6. Bagging and Storage

After cooling, pack the pellets in clean, dry, sealed containers such as woven bags or plastic bins. Keep them away from moisture, rodents, and insects. To maintain freshness, it's best to use the feed shortly after production or store it only for a short time.

Based on the process above and your preferred level of automation, we offer three different feed pellet production line configurations:

If you raise a small number of geese and want to keep costs low, a simple setup is suitable: Manual ingredient preparation → Small hammer mill → Manual mixing → Feed pellet machine → Natural drying → Manual bagging

simple configuration of goose feed pellet production line

For farms with 1,000 to 5,000 birds, a basic production line can improve efficiency: Semi-automatic batching system → Screw conveyor → Hammer mill → Manual mixing → Feed pellet machine → Natural drying → Manual bagging

goose feed pellet simple production line

If your farm has more than 5,000 geese and reducing labor is a priority, a semi-automated line is recommended: Semi-automatic batching system → Screw conveyor → Hammer mill → Screw conveyor → Horizontal mixer → Screw conveyor → Feed pellet machine → Cooling belt → Buffer bin → Manual bagging
