In Hoima, western Uganda, a local farmer runs a mid-sized maize and poultry farm. He used to rely on purchased feed, which was costly and not always available. To become more self-sufficient, he installed a small pellet machine that turns homegrown maize and by-products into feed.
The main raw materials include whole maize, screened corn cob particles, and a small amount of soybean meal.
The machine presses the mixed materials into firm pellets. The operation is smooth and clog-free. The final pellets are light golden, dense, and resistant to breaking—ideal for poultry feeding. The user placed large plastic sheets under the outlet to collect the pellets, making handling easier and allowing for natural cooling and drying.
Each batch produces around 400 kg of feed pellets—enough to meet the farm’s needs for several days. This not only reduces feed costs but also improves control over feed production. The user plans to expand livestock next quarter and is considering providing pellet processing services to nearby farmers.
